The House-to-House Polio Vaccination Campaign, has today smoothly kicked off in Kabale district.

The Ministry of Health launched the Campaign, which is targeting to vaccinate 8,791,710 children under five years of age will be vaccinated.

According, to the Assistant Kabale district health officer in charge of child and maternal health, Paddy Mwesigye, all polio vaccines and other logistical materials were distributed health facilities yesterday. He, however, said that because of inadequate vaccine carriers, they decided start with Kabale municipality and Ndorwa west constituencies, from 14th to 16th, while Ndorwa East will be catered for between 17th and 19th.
Mwesigye, who supervised the vaccination exercise, said that they started very well, since the vaccinations teams were divided, with some groups targeting schools, while others were moving House to House. He expects to hit more than 100percent.

The Acting Kabale district Health officer, Alfred Besigensi, says that the district, on Tuesday received 64500 doses of the polio vaccine to cater for all the targeted children in 729 villages in the district.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) in August declared polio, a public health emergency, after registering two positive cases from Bugolobi and Lubigi sentinel environmental surveillance sites. The new cases come just a year after the World Health Organization-WHO, declared Uganda and the entire Africa Wild polio-free in August last year.
