The Acting Kabale district health officer, Alfred Besigensi, has rallied religious leaders to embrace the planned mass vaccination against polio for children aged between 0-5 years and the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination.
Besigensi, who met with religious leaders at his office and at St Peter’s Cathedral Church Rugarama respectively on Monday this week, called on them to use their pulpits to mobilize and sensitize all believer to embrace the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination campaign and the forthcoming mass polio vaccination campaign, slated to take place from 14th to 16th January 2022.
Besigensi, also called on the public to continue adhering to standard operating procedures-SOPs aimed at forestalling the spread of Covid-19 disease during this Christmas and New Year festivities.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) in August declared polio, a public health emergency, after registering two positive cases from Bugolobi and Lubigi sentinel environmental surveillance sites. The new cases came just a year after the World Health Organization-WHO declared Uganda and the entire Africa Wild polio-free in August last year.

Uganda Virus Research Institute confirmed that the virus circulating is linked to the strain recently detected in neighboring South Sudan.
