Kigezi Tourism Stakeholders concerned over Few Women in Tour Guiding sector.

Stakeholders in the Tourism Industry in Kigezi Sub-region, are concerned over the limited number of women involved in Tour guiding in the region.

The stakeholders, raised the concern this week, while at Whitehorse Inn in Makanga, during a stakeholders’ engagement and dissemination meeting, organized by Kigezi Biota Tours with support from Incubator for Integration and Development in East Africa (IIDEA) and GIZ, under the Project dubbed “Unlocking Women’s potential in Tourist Guiding in Uganda and Rwanda”.

The meeting was attended by Tourism officers from Kabale and Rukiga districts and Kabale municipality. Others are students from various tertiary institutions and selected journalists.

The Director Kigezi Biota Tours, an organization that promotes tourism, Lillian Kamusiime, says that despite the existing training opportunities in tour guiding, a lot of females have continued to disregard the profession, which she says has continued to increase gender disparity in the sector.

Kamusiime, who is also the Vice Chairperson Uganda Safaris Guides Association, adds that as an organization, they decided to initiate the project dubbed “Unlocking Women’s potential in tourist guiding” to inspire women into embrace the industry.

Speaking at the Guest of Honour, the Kabale District Tourism officer, Bruce Atuha, said that several female tour guides have low self-esteem in the field, while others have a poor attitude towards the profession. He adds that he has discovered that even females, who study courses related with tourism and Tour guiding, tend to always apply for jobs as receptionists, which needs to be rectified as soon as possible.

He also says that the existing data has proved that there is a gender imbalance in the field tour guiding. According to the Uganda Tourism Board database, out of the 578 registered tour guides in Uganda, only 47 are women constituting only 8.1%.
