Kabale District Launches Wetland Restoration Project

In a bid to protect its environmental resource in Kahungye Sub county and around Lake Bunyonyi, Kabale District has launched restoration project for the Nyombe wetland catchment area. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the initiative aims to revive 400 hectares of the vital wetland, which borders Lake Bunyonyi.

 

Speaking in Kyampisi in Nyombe Parish of Kahungye Sub County at the Launch of the project, Henry Tumwesigye, District Natural Resource Officer, stressed the importance of community involvement, noting that local residents have agreed to vacate the wetland to prevent further pollution.

The launch, held in Nyombe Parish, Kahungye Subcounty, featured the planting of bamboo trees intended to retain water and mitigate soil erosion caused by previous drainage efforts.

The Kabale District Chief Administrative officer, John Asiimwe urged the people of Nyombe to practice modern farming methods in order to reduce on any form of soil erosion and keep the land fertile like planting of agro-forestry especially and terracing among others.

He also assured the people of Nyombe that together with the district infrastructural development especially the roads will be done and renovated to facilitate easy transport of the agricultural products to the market.

The Kabale Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Nyakahuma, called on the District Speaker to make sure that the district enacts an ordinance requiring all farmers in hilly areas in the district adopt terracing as a mechanism to combat soil erosion. He also expressed government commitment to providing alternative sources of livelihoods to all wetland evictees.

This restoration project marks a significant step toward safeguarding Nyombe wetland and lake Bunyonyi in particular, while promoting sustainable development in the district. The District leaders are calling for cooperation from Community members and government support, which they sat are key to the success of these restoration efforts.
