The Kabale district council on Wednesday approved a recommendation by the Health, community-based services and Education & Sport standing committee, to direct all parents of primary seven candidates to contribute food for lunch at school, as one of the strategies to improve the academic grades.

The motion to approve the recommendation of the committee was contained in a report presented before the council held at the district council hall by the committee’s chairperson and southern division female district council councilor, Lydia Turyasingura. The motion was anonymously adopted and approved by the entire council that was presided over by the district’s speaker Flavia Nyinagiza Kanagizi.

Nyinakiiza, observed that they found it important to task parents of primary seven candidates to contribute food for their children, to help these learners from trecking long distances back home to get lunch, while others spend the whole on an empty stomach.

The Kabale District LC5 Chairperson, Nelson Nshangabasheija notes that if the strategy proves successful at primary seven, it could be rolled out to other classes. He adds that the issue of lack of lunch for learners in schools has increased on school dropout in the district.
