‎Kabale District leaders have commissioned a retaining wall at Kahondo Health Centre III in Maziba Sub-county, a project aimed at protecting the health facility from environmental hazards and improving healthcare service delivery in the area.

‎The retaining wall, located at the health facility in Rukore Village, Kahondo Parish, was constructed by Geses Uganda Limited at a cost of UGX 317,487,600. The project also involved compound paving, installation of guardrails, and implementation of environmental and social safeguard measures.

‎Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Kabale District Health Officer, Dr. Gilbert Arinetwe Mateeka, welcomed the completion of the project, describing it as a significant boost to the health facility’s infrastructure. However, he noted that the health centre continues to face challenges related to inadequate electricity supply since the area is not connected to the national power grid, limiting the provision of some essential services.

‎The Chief Administrative Officer of Kabale District, Robert Mugabe, commended the contractor for delivering quality work and said the retaining wall would play a crucial role in protecting the health centre from possible destruction caused by floods and soil erosion.

‎Kabale District LCV Chairperson Denis Nzeire Ndyomugyenyi called upon residents living near the facility to construct trenches around their homes to control runoff water, which could threaten the integrity of the newly constructed retaining wall. He also praised health workers at the facility for their dedication, saying their efforts have contributed greatly to improved healthcare services in the area.

‎Nzeire further urged health workers to maintain professionalism and avoid late reporting to duty, noting that the government remains committed to improving the welfare of health personnel through the provision of staff accommodation and other support facilities.

‎The District Chairperson also tasked the district engineering and works department with constructing additional drainage channels around the health centre to effectively manage water runoff and safeguard the newly completed infrastructure.

‎The Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Kabale urged residents to take ownership of the facility and ensure its proper maintenance if it is to continue serving the community effectively.

‎He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector through investments in healthcare infrastructure, noting that improved facilities will enhance access to essential health services for communities.

‎He added that the continued improvement of the health sector is in line with the fourth pillar of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Manifesto for 2026–2031, which focuses on enhancing social service delivery and improving the quality of life for Ugandans.
